CIC or Certified Inpatient coders is the only certification exclusively specialized in hospital and facility inpatient coding offered by AAPC. Students who have their CIC credentials can go on to report services provided to patients who require inpatient admission in settings that include general hospitals, critical access hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehab facilities,  teaching hospitals, and long-term care hospitals.

The CIC certification, as the name suggests, is suggested for those who are working or wishing to work in inpatient settings. As per the AAPC, the CIC validates expert-level knowledge and experience to abstract information from the medical record for ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding and specialized payment knowledge in MS-DRGs and Inpatient Prospective Payment Systems (IPPS).

Course description

The course curriculum of CIC covers medical records and healthcare guidelines, various medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology, inpatient coding, compliance, and various case studies.
